Akabeko is a folk craft created approximately 400 years ago by Gamo Ujisato, the lord of the Aizu domain. Its name comes from the red cows that warded off the plague that ravaged the Heian period, and the color red is believed to ward off disease. The black dots on the Akabeko represent smallpox, and it is said that they were painted on Akabeko as a substitute to protect young children from smallpox, a disease that was once fatal. It was customary for lower-ranking Aizu samurai to give Akabeko as gifts, praying for their children's healthy and healthy growth. The Akabeko's head shakes to soothe children.
