[Introduction]
"We are free to do what we want.
Get loaded, have fun and party."
The '90s kicked off with "Screamadelica."
A tale of mayhem and celebration, robbed by Thatcher and saved by acid house.
How a Glaswegian rock kid became a bona fide rock star
His awakening to punk, joining the Jesus and Mary Chain, founding Primal Scream, meeting Andrew Weatherall, and the birth of the historic album "Screamadelica": the Primal Scream frontman talks about everything from sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
"Gillespie is the Oliver Twist of rock 'n' roll. A razor-sharp punk rock fairy tale that cuts into class warfare, music and style, and a unique take on the world from one of the world's greatest bands. I couldn't put it down." - Courtney Love
"If you could capture the spirit of rock and roll in one person, it would be Bobby Gillespie. This book is a beautiful affirmation not just of a life of rock but of the working-class culture that shaped it. Reading it brought tears of joy to my eyes, but also of immense anger at what we have lost." - Irvine Welsh (novelist and Trainspotting author)
Bobby Gillespie was born into a working-class family in Springburn, Glasgow, in the summer of 1961. He left school at 16 and began work as a printer's apprentice, when the lightning-like revelation of rock and roll came from Phil Lynott. His fate was sealed with the arrival of the Sex Pistols and punk rock, a vision of iconoclasm and class rebellion.
Bobby eventually became an artist and started the Jesus and Mary Chain and then Primal Scream.
Moving into the 90s, Bobby's journey accelerated. The Summer of Love, the Boy's Own parties, and a fateful meeting with Andrew Weatherall. A new wave of electronic soul music touched the British consciousness, and he released the album that is said to have "launched the 90s", Screamadelica. It was a record that radically reshaped the future of fin de siècle British pop, full of the joys and surprises of the apostles of rock and roll.
