Akabeko is a folk craft that was first created by Gamo Ujisato, the lord of the Aizu domain, about 400 years ago.
It originates from the red cows that warded off an epidemic that was rampant during the Heian period, and the color red is believed to ward off disease.
The black dots on Akabeko represent "hoso" (smallpox), and it is said that they were painted on Akabeko as a substitute to protect young children from smallpox, which was once a deadly disease.
It was a custom for lower-ranking samurai in Aizu to give Akabeko dolls shaking their heads as a prayer for children to grow up strong and healthy.
It is designed to be able to shake its head to soothe the baby.
